Dictionary.com We define marketing as"an activity or business that promotes and sells products or services, including market research and advertising.""

If you work in a marketing role like me, you probably have a hard time defining marketing even if you see and use it every day-the term marketing changes due to its small, all-encompassing, and simple definition.

This definition seems useless.

For example, the sales part overlaps a little too closely with the definition of"what to sell", and the idea of Madmen brainstorming an advertising session with the word "What to sell".

But as I went deeper, I began to see that marketing actually overlapped heavily on advertising and sales. Marketing is present at all stages of the business.

What is Marketing?

Marketing refers to all the actions a company takes to attract the public with its products or services through high quality news. The long-term goal is to demonstrate product value, strengthen brand loyalty, and ultimately increase sales.

At first, I wondered why marketing is a necessary part of product development,i.e. sales pitch or retail sales. But if you think about it, it makes sense-the marketer has the strongest finger on the pulse of the consumer personality.

The purpose of marketing is to constantly research and analyze consumers, form focus groups, send surveys, study online shopping habits and ask fundamental questions: "Where, when, and how can our consumers communicate with our company?"

Here, let's look at the purpose of marketing, as well as the type of marketing, 4 p.s. of marketing, and the difference between marketing and advertising.

Whether you are an experienced marketer who wants to define or update a beginner who wants to understand what marketing is all about, we have it all for you. Let's dive.

Marketing Purpose

Marketing is the process of getting people interested in your company's products or services. This is done through market research, analysis, and understanding of the interests of ideal customers. Marketing applies to all aspects of the business, including product development, distribution methods, sales, and advertising.

Modern marketing began in the 1950s when people began to use more than just print media to promote their products. As television and soon the Internet entered households, marketers were able to run entire campaigns across multiple platforms. And, predictably, over the past 70 years, marketers have become increasingly important in optimizing how companies sell their products to consumers in order to optimize their success.

In fact, the basic purpose of marketing is to attract consumers to the brand through messaging. Ideally, this messaging will be useful and educational for your target audience, allowing you to transform consumers into leads.

Today, there are literally dozens of places where you can run a marketing campaign-where do you do it in the 21st century?

Types of Marketing

Where your marketing activities live depends entirely on where your customers spend their time. Your mission is to do market research to determine what type of marketing-what tools to each type-is the best way to build your brand. Here are some types of marketing related today, some of which have stood the test of time:

Internet Marketing: Inspired by Exedrine's product campaigns produced online, the idea of being present on the Internet for business reasons is a kind of marketing in itself.

Search Engine Optimization: Abbreviated as"Search engine optimization", this is the process of optimizing the content of a website so that it appears in search engine results. It is used to attract people who perform searches, indicating that marketers are interested in learning a particular field.

Blog Marketing: Blogs are no longer exclusive to authors. Brands are now writing about their industry and publishing blogs that attract the interest of potential customers who are looking for information on the Internet.

Facebook Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and similar social networks can be used by companies to create audience exposure over time.

Print marketing: As newspapers and magazines become increasingly aware of who is ordering their print materials, companies will continue to sponsor articles, photos, and similar content in publications that their customers read.

Search Engine Marketing: This type of marketing is slightly different from the search engine optimization described above. Companies can now pay search engines to place links to pages in their index that are highly regarded by their audience. (It's a concept called"pay-per-click" - I'll show you an example of this in the next episode).

Video marketing: There was only advertising, but marketers are now investing their money in creating and publishing all kinds of videos that entertain and educate their core customers.

Marketing and Advertising

If marketing is a wheel, then advertising is talked about this wheel.

Marketing means product development, market research, product sales, sales strategy, promotion, and customer service. Marketing is essential at every stage of a company's sales journey and leverages the numerous platforms, social media channels, and teams within an organization to identify audiences, communicate with them, raise their voices, and build brand loyalty over time.

On the other hand, advertising is only part of marketing. It is usually a strategic effort paid to spread awareness of the product or service, as part of the broader goals above. Simply put, it's not the only way to sell products.

Here's an example(read on, you have a quiz at the end):

Let's say a company wants to create a campaign to introduce a brand new product and promote this product on its customer base. Facebook Instagram, Google, and the company's website are the channels selected by the company.. Use all this space to support various campaigns on a quarterly basis and create clues through these campaigns.

To promote the launch of new products,it will publish downloadable product guides on its website, post videos on Instagram showing new products, and invest in Google-sponsored search results that drive traffic to new product pages on its website..

Which of the above decisions was marketing and which was advertised?

The ads were on Instagram and Google.. Instagram is usually an advertising channel, but if you use it for branding, you can develop a follower base that will be ready every now and then for a smooth product announcement. Google was certainly used in advertising in this example;the company pays for space with Google-a program known as Pay per Click(Pay per Click)-for direct traffic to specific pages focused on its products. Classic Internet display.

Where did marketing occur? This was a bit of a trick question, because marketing was the whole process. The company ran a three-part marketing campaign that identified Instagram,Google, and its own website as customer-focused initiatives to identify the target audience, create a message for that target audience, and spread it across the industry to maximize its influence..

Marketing 4 Pieces

In 1960, Jerome Mccarthy invented e 4 pieces. marketing: Product, price, location, promotion.

Basically, these 4 p.s. describes how marketing interacts with every step of your business.

Products

Let's say you have an idea for a product that you want your company to sell. What future plans? You are unlikely to succeed if you start selling it.

Instead, your marketing team needs to perform market research and answer a critical question: who is your target audience? Is this a suitable market for this product? Which messaging increases product sales and on which platforms? How should product developers modify their products to increase their chances of success? How does the target group think about the product and what questions or concerns do they have?

Marketers use answers to these questions to help companies understand product demand and improve product quality by citing the concerns of target customers or survey participants.

Price

The marketing team checks the price of a competitor's product or uses focus groups and surveys to assess how much the ideal customer is willing to pay. Prices are too high and you lose a solid customer base. The price is too low, and you can lose more money than you get. Fortunately, marketers can use industry research and consumer analysis to measure good prices.

Place

It is important for the marketing department to use the company's understanding and analysis of consumers to make suggestions about how and where to sell products. Perhaps you think that e-commerce websites work better than retail stores, or vice versa. Or it can provide insight into where products can be sold most profitably both domestically and internationally.

Promotion

This promotion is probably what you expected from the beginning: the promotion does not require online or print advertising, events,or create a discount marketing team to increase awareness and interest in the product, and ultimately, lead to more sales. At this point, you can see how promotional campaigns, ads, or social media promotions work.

Hopefully, our specifications and four p.s. will help you understand the purpose and definition of marketing. Marketing overlaps all areas of your business, so it's important to understand how to use marketing to increase your business's efficiency and success.
